With this new knowledge I've tried to tackle the ODT way again and realized that the download didn't get stuck, it is just painfully slow (the target directory contains now 5 files and 3 folders with a size of 760kb after over an hour). A manual installation via the C2R installer showed errors about the download, so I've tried to just to get it installed in some way and used the "Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant for Office 365" and let it run overnight (though at some point my PC restarted).
